“Salt” has been designed, printed and bound by the artist.  The ideas and materials used in creating this book are closely linked to Gandhi and his beliefs in village arts and crafts: making objects by hand that have longevity, and born out of dedication and hard work.  The evidence of production by hand is an integral part of the design.

Images for the project were created using a large format (4×5) Wista camera over a period of two years.

Print Type: Giclee print on Hahnemuhle German Etching Paper 310 gsm

This is a heavyweight archival paper with a fine textured surface.

Binding: The book is constructed using Coptic binding.  This binding technique allows the book to open flat.

The binding is with a linen thread, hand waxed. No glue has been used. All the materials are acid free and of archival quality. No bleach has been used in any of the materials.

All the paper in the book is hand made in India from recycled cotton rag.

Khadi: All the cloth in the book is khadi (hand-spun cotton), commissioned by the artist from the great grandchildren of Ramgidada and his wife Gangben who in 1918 taught Gandhi to weave on his return from South Africa.  Ramgidada established a weaving center at Sabarmati ashram in Ahmedabad on the request of Gandhi who regarded weaving khadi as a way of life.

Desk: The design of the desk was inspired by Gandhi’s original desk. It was commissioned by the artist and hand-made of reclaimed Indian teak wood in India.

Each Artist’s book is supplied with  a certificate signed by the Artist and a unique edition number.
